This small mount of brass was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It could have been used for a number of purposes. The object dates from between 80 and 180 AD. This picture shows the back of the small oblong plate.

The Roman army garrisoned at Newstead required the services of smiths, woodworkers and other craft specialists. A large range of objects were made, some for everyday use and some more ornate. Other items were imported.
