Printed page, from La Mode Illustreé

This page is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1873, the page lists various illustrated advertisements, including one for 'Izod's Patent Corsets'.

The corset advert claims, 'They are MOULDED BY STEAM, so that the fabric and bones are adapted with MARVELLOUS ACCURACY to every curve and undulation of the FINEST TYPE OF FIGURE.'

The wearing of corsets and tight-lacing was a subject often written about in the 19th century fashion magazine. It was suggested that such restriction accounted for the poor health of some girls but this was probably more to do with bad diet and little exercise.
