Pistol, owned by James, 4th Duke of Hamilton
Add to album

This steel pistol, inlaid with silver and brass, was owned by James, 4th Duke of Hamilton. It dates from the late 17th century.

The pistol has a lobated butt and a snaphance lock mechanism, which uses a flint to spark the gunpowder. There is a thistle on the butt, and the lockplate and fittings are engraved with leafy scrolls.

Pistols of this type were used by Highland clansmen who made up the majority of the Jacobite army raised by John Grahn, Viscount Dundee, in 1689.
