Add to album

This is the reverse of a copper halfpenny trade token of Thomas Scott of Gatehouse in Kirkcudbrightshire. Dated 1793, the token was manufactured by Waring. The die-sinker was Davies.

The reverse depicts a large building. The surrounding text reads 'PAYABLE AT THE HOUSE OF THOs. SCOTT. & Co.'

It has been estimated that between 1787 and 1817 over 10,000 different types of trade token were issued. Although some pennies were produced, the tokens were issued mainly in farthing or halfpenny denominations.
