Trade token (reverse), Halfpenny, of David Peters, Perth
Add to album

This is the reverse of a copper halfpenny trade token of David Peters of Perth. Dated 1797, the token was manufactured by Lutwyche. The die-sinker was Westwood.

The reverse depicts the arms of Perth with the Latin motto on a ribbon - 'PRO REGE LEGE ET GREGE', which translates as 'For the king, the law and the flock'.

In the second half of the 18th century, the government's failure to issue adequate small change resulted in traders and companies issuing their own token coinage. Circulated locally, trade tokens could be used to buy goods or redeemed for regal coinage.
