Trade token (reverse), Farthing, of Perth
Add to album

This is the reverse of a copper farthing trade token of Perth. Dated 1798, the token was designed by Menzies and manufactured by Kempson. The die-sinker was Willets.

The reverse depicts a girl watering cloth which is laid out for bleaching. The surrounding text reads 'IN OUR VICINITY ARE THE FINEST STREAMS & FIELDS FOR BLEACHING IN BRITAIN'.

Although growing flax and weaving linen was once commonplace in Scotland the industry has now completely disappeared.
