Trade token (reverse), Halfpenny, of E Campbell, Edinburgh
This is the reverse of a copper halfpenny trade token of E Campbell. a tobacconist in Edinburgh. Dated 1796, the token was manufactured by James of London.
The reverse depicts two crossed pipes with a snuff jar, labelled 37, below. The jar sits between two thistles. The surrounding text reads 'SAINT ANDREWS STREET EDINBURGH'.
Tobacco reached Scotland from America in the early 17th century and smoking soon became popular. Tobacco was smoked in clay pipes, which were cheap and disposable. It was not until the mid 18th century that snuff-taking became more popular than smoking.
