Add to album

This is the reverse of a copper halfpenny trade token of John Ferrier of Perth. Dated 1797, the token was manufactured by Kempson and designed by James Wright Junior. The die-sinker was Willets.

The reverse depicts a water mill with trees in the background. The surrounding text reads '46 WATER: MILLS FOR BLEACHING. PRINTING. COTTON WORKS. CORN &c WITHIN 4 MILES OF PERTH.'

Between 1787 and 1817 over 10,000 different types of trade token were issued. Tokens varied in quality from crude lead discs stamped with initials to elaborate pieces of craftwork from the die-sinkers with depictions of industrial or commercial scenes.
