Add to album

This is the reverse of a bronze medal commemorating Sir Walter Scott. The medal was designed by A.J. Stothart and produced in London in 1827 by S. Parker.

The reverse depicts a female figure leaning against a pillar on top of which is a banner inscribed, 'To great men'.

Influential throughout Europe and America, Scott is known as the father of the historical novel. Born in Edinburgh in 1771, he trained as a lawyer but was drawn to writing. His first major publication was 'The Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border' in 1802-3.
