Bronze medal (obverse) of James VIII, the Old Pretender

This is the obverse of a bronze medal of James 'VIII', the 'Old Pretender'. The medal was probably issued in 1710 to bolster support for James's cause during abortive peace negotiations between Britain and France. It was made by Norbert Roettier.

The obverse has a bust of James. The Latin inscription translates as 'James, by the grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland'.

With the death of James VII in 1701 his son led the Jacobite Cause. James VIII to the Jacobites, he was the Old Pretender to his enemies. After the Union he tried to take advantage of the government's unpopularity in Scotland.
