Trade token (reverse), Penny, of Dundee, Angus

This is the reverse of a 1798 copper penny trade token of Dundee in Angus. This rare private token was designed by James Wright Junior.

The reverse depicts Adam and Eve with the serpent in the garden of Eden surrounded by the text, '23000 INHABITANTS IN DUNDEE VID. STATISTICAL ACCOUNT BY R. SMAIL. D.D.' The biblical quote underneath reads 'BE FRUITFULL AND/MULTIPLY./GEN.1.28'.

Between 1787 and 1817 over 10,000 different types of trade token were issued to ease the shortage of small change. The contemporary fascination with tokens resulted in them becoming collectors' items. Some tokens were issued purely for collecting.
