Trade token (reverse), Penny, of Paisley, Renfrewshire
This is the reverse of a copper penny trade token of Paisley in Renfrewshire. Dated 1798 and designed by R Boog Junior, this private token is a fine example of the die-sinker's art.
The reverse depicts the interior of Paisley Abbey Church. The surrounding text reads 'INTERIOR of the ABBEY-CHURCH. as REPAIRED in its ORIGINAL STILE. A.D. 1788.'
The church is almost all that remains of Paisley Abbey. The Abbey was built on what was once the site of a Celtic monastery dedicated to St Mirin. It was originally a priory and became an abbey in 1219.
