Trade token (reverse), Halfpenny, of Alexander Swap, Dundee, Angus
Add to album

This is the reverse of a copper halfpenny trade token of Alexander Swap of Dundee in Angus. Dated 1797, the token was designed by James Wright Junior and manufactured by Kempson. The die-sinker was Wyon.

The reverse depicts a view of a ruined gateway. The text around the edge reads 'COWGATE PORT/THE LAST REMAINS OF OUR ANCIENT WALLS'.

Dundee was protected by defences from the end of the 16th century until around 1646. The Cowgait Port, at the eastern limit of the town, marked one of the former gateways into the town.
