Trade token (reverse), Halfpenny, of Patrick Maxwell, Perth
Add to album

This is the reverse of a copper halfpenny trade token of Patrick Maxwell, a grocer and spirit dealer in Perth. Dated 1797, the token was manufactured by Kendrick.

The reverse depicts the arms of Perth with the surrounding Latin motto, 'PRO REGE LEGE ET GREGE', which translates as 'For the king, the law and the flock'.

In the second half of the 18th century, the government's failure to issue adequate small change resulted in traders and companies issuing their own token coinage. Circulated locally, trade tokens could be used to buy goods or redeemed for regal coinage.
