Trade token (reverse), Halfpenny, of John Ferrier, Perth
This is the reverse of a copper halfpenny trade token of John Ferrier of Perth. Dated 1797, the token was manufactured by Kempson and designed by James Wright Junior. The die-sinker was Willets.
The reverse depicts the Tay Bridge and a distant view of the hills. Beneath the bridge are the arms of Perth with the Latin motto, 'PRO REGE LEGE ET GREGE', which translates as 'For the king, the law and the flock'.
Designed by the architect John Smeaton, the Tay Road Bridge was completed in 1771. It has nine arches and covers the 840 feet from the North Inch to Kinnoull. The bridge was widened in 1869 and is still in use today.
