Silver medal (reverse) of the West End Golf Club
Add to album

This is the reverse of a silver medal of the West End Golf Club. The medal is dated 1897.

The reverse is engraved with a list of nine winners of the quarterly competition from 1897 to 1899.

The Dutch game of 'kolf' was similar to putting - played over short distances, usually on ice. The word 'golf' first appears in the Scots language in 1457, when the game was banned by Act of Parliament because it was interfering with archery practice.
