Trade token (reverse), Halfpenny, of W. Croom, Dundee, Angus
Add to album

This is the reverse of a copper halfpenny trade token of W. Croom of Dundee in Angus. Dating from between around 1790-1800, the token was manufactured by Matthew Bolton. The die-sinker was Ponthon of Birmingham.

The reverse has the slogan of the retailer, 'SELLS/WHOLESALE/WOOLEN & LINEN/DRAPERY GOODS/WATCHES &c &c/CHEAP'.

It has been estimated that between 1787 and 1817 over 10,000 different types of trade token were issued. Although some pennies were produced, the tokens were issued mainly in farthing or halfpenny denominations.
