Trade token (reverse), Halfpenny, of Dundee, Angus
Add to album

This is the reverse of a 1796 copper halfpenny trade token of Dundee in Angus. The token was manufactured by Kempson and designed by James Wright Junior. The die-sinker was Wyon.

The reverse depicts a harbour with a sailing ship alongside a quay. Below are the arms, supporters and motto of Dundee.

Between 1787 and 1817 over 10,000 different types of trade token were issued to ease the shortage of small change. The contemporary fascination with tokens resulted in them becoming collectors' items. Some tokens were issued purely for collecting.
