This sword and leather scabbard dates from between around 1626-86 and was owned by Alexander Peden, a Covenanting minister from Ayrshire.

Alexander Peden was an Ayrshire field preacher and leading Covenanter who was admired and revered and often spoken of as a prophet. He travelled in disguise through south and southwest Scotland to conduct forbidden services, known as conventicles.
