Tea jar with brocade bag and wooden box

Tea jar of glazed stoneware with ivory lid in its own brocade bag and box. The utensils used in the ceremony are kept in special containers. They are usually marked with the maker's or owner's name, and possibly a poem.

The tea jar has an incised line around its largest periphery. The mottled brown glaze extends just inside the neck and extends to the flat base. The beige silk brocade bag has a floral motif. The box has a silk green tie.

In Japan the tea ceremony, chanoyu, is a special occasion marked by its harmony, reverence, purity and calm. The utensils used in the ceremony are kept in special containers.
