Seal box (2nd side), associated with John Graham, Earl of Montrose
Add to album

This box was made to hold a wax impression of the Great Seal of Scotland. The impression was used on a royal letter appointing John Graham, 3rd Earl of Montrose, to the post of King's Commissioner in Scotland.

The box is engraved on this side with the Earl of Montrose's arms.

In his role as King's Commissioner, John Graham was heavily involved in the negotiations when James VI tried unsuccessfully to persuade his parliaments of Scotland and England to unite.
