Black lacquer box with set of 12 ink cakes

Chinese lacquerware serves a variety of purposes. It may be used for storage or as a gift box. Some may not have had one special use.

This imperial lacquered box is designed particularly for storing a set of 12 ink cakes.

Surviving examples of Qing imperial wares confirm that scrolls of paintings and calligraphic works have also been stored individually in rectangular lacquered boxes.
