Black lacquer box with set of 12 ink cakes (detail)
Add to album

There are twelve ink cakes within this lacquered box. Each of them is decorated with a raised impression of a floral design on one side and with an imperial poem on the reverse.

The illustration here shows the imperial poems and the floral designs on these ink cakes. Each poem is inspired by a kind of flower depicted on the other side.

During the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), imperial ink cakes were produced at the palace workshops. There were also special commissions from famous ink makers in other regions, particularly in Huizhou of the Anhui province.
