White porcelain seal with animal knob (detail)

This is a detail from a personal seal. The seal bears the name of its owner on the face. It symbolises a person's identity and can be used as a signature.

Carved on the face of this white porcelain seal are four Chinese characters, "Luo Yao Guang Yin", meaning "the seal of Luo Yaoguang".

Personal seals often bear the names, sobriquets, or studio names of their owners. The most common text is simply to state the identity in the format of "the seal of so-and-so".
