Colour woodblock print, ukiyo-e

The print on the right is the right-hand print from a triptych of a festival celebrating the twin shrines of the Soga brothers by Kunisada but signed Toyokuni. It was published by Dai Tora with a aratame censors mark and the print is dated monkey 3 =1860

These two prints illustrate the use of the netsuke. They both show actors and the one on the right is described here. The actor smoking a pipe holds a tobacco pouch and pipe case in his other hand with the cord to the netsuke passing through his fingers.
