Detail of the Hunterston brooch
Add to album

This silver gilt brooch with amber settings was found at Hunterston in Ayrshire. Made around 700, it is one of the finest products of its time. This picture is a detail of the reverse side of the terminal.

The reverse of the terminal has three cast silver gilt panels decorated in a deep imitation chip-carved technique. The smooth silver metal around them has etched lines which superficially resemble runes.

The brooch has a runic inscription around the hoop, indicating that the brooch was owned and valued several hundred years after it was made. The scratched lines on the terminals also date from this later period of use.
