Telescope (detail)
Add to album

This is a detail of a brass refracting telescope dating from around 1835. The telescope was sold by John Ramage, a scientific instrument maker based in Aberdeen.

The photograph shows the signature 'I. RAMAGE/ Aberdeen' on the end of the body tube.

John Ramage (1783-1835) was one of the few Scottish instrument makers who had a good reputation in England. His Aberdeen business was taken over after his death in 1835 by his second son, also named John. It is unclear which Ramage sold this instrument.
