Refractometer (detail)
Add to album

A refractometer is used to demonstrate the laws of reflection and refraction, particularly when a beam of light moves from one medium to another, for example from water into air. This is a detail from an example probably madeby W. & S. Jones of London.

The detail shows the inscription on the brass refractometer's dial. It reads 'W. & S. Jones/LONDON'.

W. & S. Jones supplied large quantities of equipment, including demonstration apparatus like this, to schools and colleges in Britain, Europe and north America. They were in business from 1791 until 1855.
