Telescope (detail)
Add to album

This is a detail of a telescope made around 1820 by James Veitch (1771-1838), a scientific instrument maker and ploughwright based in Jedburgh in the Borders.

The detail shows the maker's signature engraved on the brass band at the lower end of the reflecting telescope's barrel. It reads 'JAMES VEITCH / INCHBONNY'.

Telescopes were James Veitch's main line in instrument making, although he did construct microscopes, barometers and other philosophical apparatus. He had originally been a ploughwright.
