Celestial globe (detail)

This is a detail of a celestial globe made in 1663 by Diya' ad-din Muhammad of Lahore in India. The globe is made of brass with silver star positions. It shows the traditional Islamic representations of the constellations.

The Persian inscription inside the Antarctic circle translates as 'Work of the least of the servants Diya ad-din Muhammad b. Qa'im Muhammad B. multa Isa b. shaikh Allah-Dad the imperial astrolabist of Lahore in the year of 1074 A.H.' (=1663 AD).

A number of globes by Diya' ad-din Muhammad are known, dating from between 1657 and 1683 AD.
