Cross shaft

This sandstone cross shaft, missing its upper part, is one of several sculptured stones found at the old church at Monifieth in Angus. It was carved sometime between 800 and 1000.

This picture shows the back of the cross. It was carved with an interlace pattern. At the bottom is a backwards-biting animal.

The early Christian sculptures in Pictland generally have a cross as the central motif, but also have Pictish symbols from the pre-Christian period and/or secular scenes. As time went on, the use of Pictish symbols declined.
