From St Blane's, Bute, Inner Hebrides

Graffiti
Add to album

This piece of slate, now in two joining pieces, was found at St. Blane's on Bute in the Inner Hebrides. It has graffiti showing a hunting scene on one side and a running hound on the other. The sketches were made between 600 and 1000.

This side shows a stag chased by a hound. Below is another, even less accomplished, attempt at drawing a hound.

For at least 5000 years people in Scotland have hunted for sport and prestige as well as to obtain food. Stone monuments showing aristocratic hunting scenes were carved around 700 to 850. Graffiti such as this are informal versions of this popular theme.
