Silver handpin
Add to album

This silver handpin with red enamel decoration is one of two similar ones found at Norrie's Law near Largo in Fife in a large hoard of silver jewellery and hacksilver. This picture shows a detail of the back of the pinhead.

The back of the pinhead was decorated with an incised Pictish symbol, often termed a 'Z-rod', similar to those carved on Pictish stones.

Monumental stones and some silver jewellery were decorated by the Picts with a range of unusual symbols, some of everyday objects and others more abstract. Many theories have been proposed to explain their meanings which nevertheless remain obscure.
