Urn and a small pot made of steatite
Add to album

This steatite urn and small steatite pot were found at Little Asta at Tingwall in Shetland. The urn held cremated remains, and the small pot was placed in the grave as an 'accessory vessel', sometime between 1800 and 1200 BC.

The thick-walled urn has been partly restored, and is missing a section near its rim. The small pot is rectangular in shape. Both are undecorated.

Inhabitants of the Northern Isles had their own funerary customs during the 2nd millennium BC, burying their dead in distinctive pots. Grave goods were rare, but included small 'accessory vessels', like those used in many cremation burials on the mainland.
