Hoard
These objects, together with two Anglo-Saxon coins which had been converted into jewellery, were buried at Croy in Inverness-shire sometime between 800 and 900.
The picture shows a silver penannular brooch with amber settings (broken in two pieces), two pieces of other penannular brooches, one with gold filigree work, beads of glass and amber, a plaited silver ribbon and an arm from a balance.
The Croy hoard is an unusual collection of objects. The jewellery is expensive, but much of it fragmentary, and the inclusion of a balance beam is unique in Pictish or Viking hoards from Scotland. The objects may have belonged to a Pictish craftsman.
