Snuff rasp of carved ivory

A snuff rasp was used like a nutmeg grater for grating dried tobacco into snuff. This is the inner side of a carved ivory snuff rasp, dating from the early 18th century and possibly made in Italy.

The inner side houses the perforated metal section for grating the snuff.

Tobacco taking was popular in Scotland from the mid-17th century. Scots became addicted to it in all its forms, whether smoking, chewing or snuffing.
