Map (sheet 4), Map of Scotland, published by John Stockdale, Piccadilly, LondonThis is sheet 4 from the twelve sheets which make up the 'Map of Scotland', a folding map published by John Stockdale of Piccadilly in London. Mounted on linen, the map is dated 31 January 1806 and is to a scale of 3.5 miles to 1 inch. This sheet contains most of the Outer Hebrides and almost all of the Island of Skye. New techniques had helped Scotland become one of the best mapped countries of the 17th-century world. The trend continued and the newly improved maps were a boon to travellers.
