This is sheet 3 from the twelve sheets which make up the 'Map of Scotland', a folding map published by John Stockdale of Piccadilly in London. Mounted on linen, the map is dated 31 January 1806 and is to a scale of 3.5 miles to 1 inch.

This sheet contains part of the Orkney Islands. Underneath the compass points on the right hand side, three separate scales are given: British Statute Miles, Scotch and Irish Miles and Common French Leagues.

Improved map production had begun in the late 16th century when Timothy Pont carried out on foot a survey of Scotland, which took him nearly 20 years. His manuscripts were later revised and eventually published by Johann Blaeu of Amsterdam in 1654.
