This is sheet 2 from the twelve sheets which make up the 'Map of Scotland', a folding map published by John Stockdale of Piccadilly in London. Mounted on linen, the map is dated 31 January 1806 and is to a scale of 3.5 miles to 1 inch.

This sheet contains the far northern coast of Scotland, from Cape Wrath on the west to John O'Groats on the east. It also includes part of the Orkney Islands.

According to Sir John Sinclair's 'Statistical Account' of the 1790s, the Dutchman Jan de Grot came to Scotland in the reign of James IV (1473-1513). He is said to have started the ferry service to Orkney - a 6.5 mile journey to South Ronaldsay.
