Add to album

This is sheet 10 from the twelve sheets which make up the 'Map of Scotland', a folding map published by John Stockdale of Piccadilly in London. Mounted on linen, the map is dated 31 January 1806 and is to a scale of 3.5 miles to 1 inch.

The bulk of this sheet is taken up with the northern coast of Northern Ireland. In the top right hand corner is the lower half of the Isle of Islay.

Improved map production had begun in the late 16th century when Timothy Pont carried out on foot a survey of Scotland, which took him nearly 20 years. His manuscripts were later revised and eventually published by Johann Blaeu of Amsterdam in 1654.
