This letter, addressed to William Wilson & Sons of Bannockburn near Stirling, is an order for supplying lengths of tartan as per the attached sample. Dated Edinburgh, 13 October 1832, the letter is signed by Romanes & Paterson.

The pencil inscription underneath the sample reads, 'Gordon 1832 with silk'.

Today's distinctive clan tartan patterns were created in the 19th century. Different combinations of colour and pattern, known as 'setts', varied from area to area and were later adopted by different families and clans.
