This letter, addressed to William Wilson & Sons of Bannockburn near Stirling, is an order for supplying lengths of tartan as per the attached samples. The letter is dated Dunfermline, 27 September 1825.

The pencil inscription above the letter reads, 'Leslie'.

Today's distinctive clan tartan patterns were created in the 19th century. The convention that the clan tartan be endorsed by the chief of a name was established by the Highland Society of London, who began their collection of tartan samples in 1816.
