Add to album

This letter, addressed to William Wilson & Sons of Bannockburn near Stirling, is an order for supplying lengths of tartan as per the attached sample. The letter is dated Dublin, 22 March 1825.

The pencil inscription above the letter reads, 'LESLIE, HUNTING'.

Wilsons' tartan weaving firm, reputedly founded in 1724, monopolized the supply of tartan cloth to the army up until the mid-19th century. They also met the ever increasing public demand for tartan.
