Letter, associated with William Wilson & Sons, Bannockburn, near Stirling
Add to album

This letter, dating from between the late 18th and mid 19th century, is addressed to William Wilson & Sons of Bannockburn near Stirling. It details the pattern for a tartan 'sett'.

Setts were combinations of colour and pattern, adopted by different families and clans for their tartan garments.

Wilsons' tartan weaving firm, reputedly founded in 1724, monopolized the supply of tartan cloth to the army up until the mid-19th century. They also met the ever increasing public demand for tartan.
