This letter, addressed to William Wilson & Sons of Bannockburn near Stirling, is an order for supplying lengths of tartan as per the attached sample. The letter is dated Inverness, 23 January 1821.

The pencil inscription above the letter reads, 'Royal Stewart'.

Today's distinctive clan patterns do not have a long history. They were created in the 19th century when tartan was revived and adopted as the national dress by Highlanders and Lowlanders alike.
