Medals (reverse) commemorating the coronation of Charles I
Add to album

These are the reverses of two silver medals commemorating the Scottish coronation of Charles I in 1633.

The reverse bears a thistle. The Latin inscription translates as 'From this have grown our roses/Crowned 18 June/1633 B'.

The 'B' in the inscription is the initial of Nicholas Briot, who was working at the Tower Mint in London in 1633. Briot was appointed Master of the Scottish Mint in 1635. He was a pioneer of the use of machinery to strike coins and medals.
