Medal (copy) (obverse), commemorating marriage of Mary, Queen of Scots and Francois, French Dauphin

This is the obverse of a copy of a medal made in honour of the marriage of Mary, Queen of Scots and the Dauphin Francois in 1558. The copy, which is larger than the original, dates from the 19th-century. It is made of bronze.

The obverse has busts of Francis and Mary face to face beneath a crown. The Latin inscription translates as 'Mary and Francis, by the grace of God, Queen and King of the Scots, Dauphin of Vienna'.

Born in Scotland, Mary was brought up in France, where at the age of 16 she married Francois, the French Dauphin. After the death of her father-in-law Henri II, she reigned briefly as Queen of France. Francois died in 1560.
