Letter (first page), to William Wilson & Sons, Bannockburn, near Stirling
Add to album

This is the first page of a letter addressed to William Wilson & Sons, a tartan weaving firm from Bannockburn near Stirling. Dated 3 January 1843, the letter is from the 93rd Highlanders Regiment and is an order for army clothing.

Included in the order are '6 pieces of Private's Tartan'.

After George IV's visit to Scotland in August 1822, tartan became very fashionable. The visit stimulated the production of tartan fabric, the creation of many new tartan patterns, and the research which identified the setts of each clan and family.
