Letter (first page), to William Wilson & Sons, Bannockburn, near Stirling
Add to album

This is the first page of a letter addressed to William Wilson & Sons, a tartan weaving firm from Bannockburn near Stirling. Dated 24 December 1856, the letter is from the 74th Highlanders Regiment and concerns army clothing.

In the letter, the author states that, 'we have not received any authority from the 74th Highrs to make you the payment to which you refer'.

The 1822 visit of George IV to Edinburgh boosted the popularity of tartan and Wilsons were selling it as quickly as they could make it. They opened a new mill to satisfy demand and introduced many new patterns.
