Banknote (front), One pound, issued by City of Glasgow Bank

This is the front of a one pound banknote issued by the City of Glasgow Bank in 1872. The note was printed using steel plates engraved by Gilmour & Dean of Glasgow.

The front has an upper central vignette of Queen Victoria with oval panels on either side, printed in blue, containing the value 'one'. The note is signed by the accountant and the cashier.

The City of Glasgow Bank was established in 1839 as a 'joint stock' bank with 779 shareholders. In 1857, it suspended payments for 33 days but survived the crisis. It closed in 1878, and was one of only three large failures in the Scottish banking system.
